During these hot August days in the valley, we would all like to share something cold and refreshing with our pups! Unfortunately, human treats such as ice cream and popsicles are too high in sugar to be safe for our canine companions. Here are some fun, safe, homemade items you can feel good about giving to your dogs at home:
Cold fruits and vegetables: Some dogs love snacking on chilled fruits and veggies! A few of our dogs in the pet hotel come in with frozen blueberries to snack on. Others love snacking on chilled baby carrots–the crunch is fantastic! Other safe fruits and veggies include green beans and sweet potato. Remember, moderation is key!
Frozen canned dog food: One fun and safe treat for our dogs is frozen dog food. By taking the canned food version of your dog’s current diet and freezing it in an ice cube tray, you can create tasty, cold treats for your pet. Another unique idea is stuffing a kong with the canned dog food, and then freezing the kong, so that your dog has a delicious toy to occupy him for hours!
Please consult one of our staff veterinarians for portion amounts with these tasty treats! These treats are fun to share with your pet, but must be given with discretion and in moderation to prevent and stomach upset!
